Beast Mode in Harmony: The Rise and Redemption of Johnny Suite

Mililani's Elijah Lagafuaina went from humbled benchwarmer at Mt. SAC to the Waikiki Shell with Fiji, and built a reggae-gospel sound on gratitude.

Mililani, Hawai‘i — Before the sold-out shows and studio sessions with Pacific Island legends, Elijah Lagafuaina—known to fans as Johnny Suite—was just a kid from Kipapa Park, chasing dreams with slippers in hand and a fire in his heart.

“I rep Kipapa hard,” Elijah says. “It’s where I learned everything—football, community, resilience.”

Football was his first stage. Raised in a family of athletes—his father a rugby player, his mother a kickboxer and multi-sport standout—Elijah was a standout from age seven. But talent alone wasn’t enough. At Mt. San Antonio College, he went from all-state star to humbled benchwarmer. “I was getting burnt like toast,” he admits. “It humbled me.”

The turning point came not on the field, but in a book: Pound for Pound Principle by Pastor Mike Kai. “It’s not about what you have,” Elijah says. “It’s about what you do with what you have.” He raised his GPA from 1.6 to 3.5, earned a starting spot, and began studying film like a pro.

That same mindset carried him into music.

After football, Elijah worked construction by day and bounced at clubs by night. One evening, his cousins—musicians for Pacific Island icons—pulled him on stage mid-shift. He sang “Sweet Darlin’.” The crowd erupted. “That moment changed everything,” he says.

Then came the call from Fiji.

After opening for the legend at Artistry in Hawai‘i, Elijah was invited to the studio. “I was trippin’,” he says. “I was in the studio with legends—Fiji, Longoslavia, Ben Walla.” Days later, he was performing at the Waikiki Shell. No rehearsal. No safety net. Just raw talent and readiness.

His debut EP, Keep It Movin, dropped in 2019 and was nominated for a 2020 Island Music Award. The breakout single “Thank You”—a heartfelt homage to those who shaped his journey—has racked up over 4 million streams on Spotify and nearly 3 million views on YouTube. His follow-up tracks, including “Beast Mode,” “God Gave Me You,” and “Dancing Shoes,” blend reggae, gospel, R&B, soul, and pop into a sound that’s uniquely his.

More Than Melody

Johnny Suite’s music is more than melody—it’s mission. “You listen to the message in all my music, it’s really about appreciation,” he says. “It’s about being grateful for what you have in front of you.” He’s toured with Pacific Island legends like Fiji, Laga Savea, Kiwini Vaitai, and GRAMMY-nominated J Boog. In 2024, he made his festival debut at IMF Guam and performed at Holo Holo Festival in Las Vegas and Sacramento. In early 2025, he fulfilled a lifelong dream by performing at the One Love Festival in Tauranga, New Zealand.

Whether on turf or track, mic or moment, Elijah brings the same energy. “I start every show with Beast Mode,” he says. “I do the Ray Lewis dance. It’s who I am—a competitor.” And when asked to choose between a game-winning tackle or a sold-out crowd singing his lyrics, he doesn’t hesitate: “It’s the music. When people sing ‘Thank You,’ I see emotion. I get messages saying it changed their life. That’s why I’m here.”

Now, as he prepares to speak to the Mt. SAC football team and perform at House of Blues, he reflects on his journey. “I’d tell young Johnny Suite—get your act together. God has bigger plans for you.”

From Kipapa Park to global stages, Elijah Lagafuaina’s story is one of redemption, rhythm, and relentless heart. And he’s just getting started.
