We recently caught up with Baby Nansen, a powerhouse from the stunning villages of Le’auva’a and Vailima in Samoa, who is an integral part of Team Samoa MMA. This passionate fighter has been a key force in the team’s incredible achievement at GAMMA Worldwide 2024, where they brought home an impressive total of 10 medals: 4 Gold, 1 Silver, and 5 Bronze.
Baby shared a bit about her journey, revealing that she has fought in approximately 78 bouts, most of which were for New Zealand and Oceania titles in kickboxing and boxing. Her love for MMA comes from its versatility, combining stand-up and ground techniques, but her heart truly belongs to Muay Thai. It’s the sport she began with and will always return to.
Team Samoa MMA’s rise to #3 in the world is a testament to their dedication. “We are so blessed,” Baby says with pride. Getting to this point wasn’t easy, though. The trip to Indonesia was self-funded, and each member of the team was deeply passionate about achieving their goals. Baby credits their strong management and drive of their athletes for their success.
“It means so much to us to represent our roots and our beautiful motherland, Samoa. It’s an honor to fight for our country, showcasing our unique strengths and weaknesses. We love Samoa.”
Focus. Fight. Fun. Family.
The GAMMA World Championships in December 2024 was a turning point for Team Samoa MMA. Their Instagram post captured their journey beautifully: “Many hands have prayed for our team to be here. Many hands have prayed for the protection and well-being of our team. To all the hands that have supported, prayed for, and served our team, this one is for US. It always takes a village, and that’s why we are TEAM SAMOA. United at the forefront, shielding and protecting in Samoa’s honor.”
Their victory wasn’t just about the medals; it was about the immense effort, resilience, and teamwork that got them there. Some fighters competed multiple times in just a few days, more than most would in an entire year! “What a team of true warriors we have,” the post continues. Team Samoa MMA’s hard work and dedication didn’t go unnoticed, and Baby’s words echo the team’s ethos: “Samoa mo Samoa, always.”
Despite the team’s success, Baby is quick to acknowledge the challenges they faced, especially during training. “The hardest part was making weight,” she admits. “We all had to stay focused and check ourselves to make sure we were hitting all the requirements: weight, energy, and training.” But Baby credits the strong sense of unity within the team for overcoming these obstacles. “We all stayed grounded and got the job done with the right mindset.”
The energy and camaraderie within Team Samoa MMA is infectious. “You know how our people are; there’s humor in everything, and our team is full of joy. We’re family-oriented, and it’s not forced. Everyone respects and loves each other for who they are. We do everything big, eat big, love big, fight big. We have big hearts, and we welcome more passionate fighters to join us!” she laughs, inviting others to reach out via their Instagram page (@teamsamoamma) if they’re interested in joining the team.
A Message to Future Fighters
When asked about her message to future fighters, Baby offers wisdom: “Don’t hold back. Show up, because there’s always a reason to fight for something.” Combat sports, she explains, teach you to push through tough times and keep fighting. “Train hard, and when training gets tough, remember… it’s just part of the process. Never give up.”
Representing Samoa on the world stage is an honor for Baby. “Fighting for Samoa, my people, and my bloodline is such a blessing,” she says with humility. Her hope is to inspire the next generation of fighters. “I want to spread love and respect through this sport and show the world the strength and spirit of Samoa.”
Looking ahead, Baby has big dreams for herself and Team Samoa MMA. “I want to continue promoting combat sports in Samoa. Even though I live in New Zealand, my heart will always be with Samoa. I want to keep spreading the word about the incredible fighters we have in Samoa and around the world.” She also runs her own gym and is involved in nonprofit work, hoping to one day travel the world and share her passion for combat sports on a global scale.
We want to congratulate Baby, the leaders behind Team Samoa MMA, and the entire team for their dedication, hard work, and accomplishments. Their passion for their heritage and for the sport is inspiring, and we can’t wait to see what they achieve next.
