Lita Lewis is an African American, Samoan woman who has trail-blazed and impacted so many people in her community and internationally through motivational speaking and life coaching. She is well known throughout the fitness industry, having multiple platforms and resources to meet anyone's fitness and wellness needs.
In an interview, Lita Lewis shares her wisdom on ways to improve our mental health. Lewis is a big believer in strengthening our minds to become the best version of ourselves from the inside out. With that, she gives us four hacks we can do on our own to better ourselves mentally.
1. Practice Self Care
Guilty as can be, oftentimes, many of us neglect to take care of ourselves. Culturally, we are raised to take care of everyone else first, but in doing so, we can also lose sight of self care. Even when we get busy with our own personal lives, we fail to remember self maintenance! Lita shares with us some examples of self care practices that can help improve our mental state:
- 5 minutes of mindfulness meditation
- Taking a candle light bath
2. Movement
Some noteworthy quotes Lita shared highlighted the importance of how moving our body correlates with other aspects of our life.
"Science proves that when we move our physical body, it will help with our mental, emotional, and spiritual health."
"Whether you want to go beast mode in the gym or take a yoga class, movement is key for mental health!"
With this mindset hack, we can take note how integrated our overall physical and mental wellness is with one another. Moving our physical body helps other areas in our body to be positively stimulated.
3. Journaling / Vision Board
I am a very big believer in journaling! I am so glad that Lita touched on this practice because journaling is another form of self therapy for so many people. It is a great way to let out any thoughts or emotions that are hard to say aloud. "Sometimes it's hard to speak on things that we may be struggling with mentally so the idea of putting our words in writing can be a release for some people."
Another way to hack your mind, if writing isn't your favorite thing to do, is to make vision boards. Making vision boards is another way to "organize/process your thoughts and what you want to accomplish in a visual and creative way."
4. Have Dialogue
On the other hand, for those who don't like to write or creatively express what is in their head, Lita shares how we should "have conversations with someone(s) we trust and love, so we can have open dialogue and feel confident sharing vulnerability."
I loved this mindset hack Lita shared because talking about what we are going through is so important to bettering our mental health. This mindset hack reminds me of a well known saying of "say what's on your mind." This quote is so simple, yet so deep! It gives us an entrance to speak what's on our mind and not let those thoughts linger in our heads! Having healthy dialogue with people we trust, gives us a healthy outlet to talk about any issues, problems, dreams, goals, experiences that are all locked up in our head.
